The teams are underway for the 2011 Reno/Tahoe Odyssey, a 178 mile run from Reno to Lake Tahoe. This run has 36 legs of various lengths and difficulties and is built for 12 man teams, with each member required to complete at least 3 legs. It a fun event pushing even the best runners to the limits. The race starts in Reno on the Truckee River, heads to Truckee then ends at Lake Tahoe. The course begins and ends at 4490 feet and reaches a maximum elevation of 7334.
I nearly got hooked into this run at the last minute after receiving a call from a friend this morning that one of their teams runners had to cancel. By the time I called, the slot was filled and I could hear enthusiastic cheers in the background as the race was well on it’s way. A sign of relief on one hand and a longing to sign up next year on the other-this stuff is contagious!
Living in Truckee for over 20 years now has taught me many things, but one aspect of this community that stands out the most is the how incredible the athletes are here. People here don’t mess around. If they are going out for a run, it’s not down the street and around the corner, it’s around Donner Lake (twice) or up a 3000 foot climb. If there’s a bike ride, 20 miles of cruising simply won’t do. Swimming across the length of Lake Tahoe or around Donner Lake is the norm for some of my swim buddies. It seems like this area breeds athletic excellence. It can be intimidating at times, but on the other hand it’s fun. It’s hard not to become enthusiastic about hopping on a mountain bike or signing up for a mountain run at Squaw Valley.
I guess everybody is here for a reason and that’s the outdoor lifestyle. Get out there today and sign up for something local. If not the Odyssey run, go for one of the local cycling century rides or the Tough Mudder event in Squaw in September (I’m in!). There’s the Donner Lake swim in August (also in!), Thursday night mountain bike races at Northstar or Tuesday night Luna Chic bicycle rides (in yet again!). Whatever sport you choose, just have fun with it and enjoy this beautiful community of people and nature and inspiration that we live in!!!
