Date: Saturday, August 13, 2016
Time: 8:30 a.m.
Location: Donner Memorial State Park, east end of the lake
The 400 swimmers who will participate in this year’s event have trained for it. They know this is a high-altitude, cool water, lengthy swim. While the course is straight, previous experience will help them during this competition. Swimmers also realize they will have strict conditions imposed on them. Here are just a few of those conditions:
- Pre-race instructions are at 8:15 a.m., with the race starting at 8:30 a.m.
- A time limit for 2 hours, 30 minutes will be strictly enforced
- Only category 1 swim suits are allowed (defined in the U.S. masters Swimming Rules)
There are several Masters divisions, according to age (e.g., 18-24, 25-29). Awards will be presented to the first swimmers to finish – both women and men – and for the top six finishers in each age group.
If you are planning to attend this event as a spectator, there are a few details you should know about. If you want to be there at race start, and are driving, you’ll want to park at the Donner Museum parking lot, or for f-r-e-e on the south side (only) of Donner Pass Road. For race completion, it will be the West End Beach parking lot. You’ll be pleased to know a shuttle will be operating between the start and finish areas, beginning at 6:30 a.m. Note also that the West End Beach does have an admission fee. No animals are allowed in the park.
