At Royal Gorge, cross-country skiing is ‘on fire’ (in a cold, snowy way of course)! Of the many upcoming events, you may be interested in the Gold Rush/US Marathon National Championships, coming up on March 20, 2016. Here are a few details to pique your interest…
There are three different competition levels, each increasing in distance, beginning at 8 a.m. at Summit Station in Soda Springs, beginning with the Gold run:
- Gold – 42 K
- Silver – 28 K
- Bronze – 14 K
The registration fee for each is the same: $45. However, registering after March 14 will cost you $60. A map of the terrain, including directions, and a few extra details, can be found on this Web page, or you can give them a call at (530) 426-3871. Royal Gorge is known for hosting various events, including “specialized clinics to help improve your skiing and world class racing”. According to the xcskiworld.com National Masters Home page, the Gold Rush “beckons skiers from near and far as one of the last premier races on the North American annual race schedule.” From fabulous vistas to the loop tour of Royal Gorge Summit Station, this is one amazing event.
This source goes on to say that while skiers, of any age category, can ski any California Gold Rush distance, only official distances for each category count towards National Masters titles and/or U.S. Masters XC Ski Team designations. There will be awards for the top three age/gender Masters finishers. To learn more about the Masters’ qualifications or information, please visit the American Cross Country Skiers home page, listed above.
