What shows off individual endurance, strength, and guts? The Ironman! Last year’s local event had to be cancelled due to rain, so this year’s Ironman Lake Tahoe will be a doubly-amazing event! Athletes will swim, bike, and run: all at a breathtakingly beautiful 6,000 feet of altitude. Race day this year is Sunday, September 20, 2015.
Imagine this: the day begins with a swim in beautiful – and at that time of year, probably chilly – Lake Tahoe. The setting is early morning at Kings Beach State Recreation Area. After the swim, athletes have a bit of distance to cover to get to the changing tent. Once out of the tent, they still have to traverse a bit of a distance to get on their bikes. The cycling begins, and riders will have spectacular sea views as they make their way down a 21-mile ride into Tahoe City, along the Truckee River, past Squaw Valley, and into Truckee. They’ll turn back, go past Northstar, and then do their first real climb at Dollar Hill. They’ll see this three times, so they have to keep up their reserves. They’ll end up back in the Squaw Valley resort area toward their next and last transition: running. Spectators will be lined up, cheering. Perhaps you’ll be one? Perhaps you’ll be one of the riders. Runners will complete two loops of sometimes hilly terrain. The second loop, at 9 miles, is slightly shorter than the first. Athletes will expend everything they’ve got to make it to the finish line.
Are you already in training and part of this upcoming endurance event? Perhaps you want to come out and cheer those who will undoubtedly extend their last ounces of energy to make the run? Once on the site, in addition to the large, red Register button, you’ll find lots of information, and a variety of useful links near the bottom of the page.
