Music, anyone? How about free music? We have great news for you: there are two music series coming up again this summer. Enjoy Music in the Park on Wednesday evenings, Music on the Beach on Friday evenings, or both! Let’s get started by looking at the Wednesday music series…
Music in the Park
Music in the Park is a Truckee tradition. As a resident, you already know this, and you probably know as well how many visitors it attracts. Every Wednesday night over the summer, beginning on June 22 and running through to August 31, you can enjoy a free night presented by Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District. Though the event is free, please consider donating to help keep it alive and attract great bands. Blue donation boxes appear throughout the park. The venue is Truckee Regional Parks ‘Salty’ Gebhardt Amphitheater. The timing is from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
This all-ages weekly series showcases regional bands. You’ll want to bring blankets or lawn chairs, spread out with the family, and enjoy our beautiful summer evenings. You’re also encouraged to bring your own food and beverages. You don’t have to imagine an amphitheater surrounded by aspen and pine trees, beside a river: you have these gifts right here in Truckee. If the kids come along, you’re asked to supervise them at all times. This is a smoke-free environment, and no dogs are allowed.

Music on the Beach
On Friday evenings, beginning June 17 and going all the way to September 2, enjoy free live Music on the Beach. It’s almost here. Except for July 1 and August 12, you can enjoy a summer line-up that features 10 different bands. The venue is Kings Beach State Recreation Area, and most concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. Following are a few details, highlighting a few of the bands appearing, to help you plan your Friday nights.
- June 17, 2016 – The Blues Monsters. This band is busy all year ‘round. They’ve been called the “Best Blues Band in Tahoe.” You can check out their website here.
- July 22, 2016 – Abalone Grey. This group formed in 2014. Musicians from various projects “joined together at one of those “classic, rare and special musical gatherings” on the north coast of Santa Cruz”. You may recognize some of the names: Bobcat Rob Armenti, Kat Factor, Luke Kinney. From soulful lyrics, to folk love ballads, to “foot stomping rhythms”, they have quite a collection of talent and styles.
- September 2, 2016 – Achilles Wheel. Does Roots, World, and Rock & Roll mix? Sure it does, in this band! Their breakout performance was in 2012 at the Kate Wolf Music Festival. Since then, they’ve been busy performing, and have recently released Stones to Sand, their second studio recording. Their songwriting and musicianship has earned them spots at various festivals including The Strawberry Music Festival and Dead on the Creek.
