As winter turns to spring, we skiers and snowboarders like to celebrate in unusual ways. Northstar’s Spring It On! Pond Skim and Squaw Valley’s Cushing Crossing are two wacky ways we treat spring fever in the Tahoe – Truckee community.
Spring It On! Pond Skim
Where or when else other than Northstar California’s Spring It On! Pond Skim can you “watch neon-clad daredevils launch through the Pond Skim” as you relax on the deck enjoying food and drink specials, and live music? Nowhere! This annual family-friendly happening has a bit of something for everyone. It takes place this year on April 2, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Do you live in or near Truckee? Want to watch or participate?
Known affectionately as just the Pond Skim, participants line up to register at 9 a.m. the day of (registration is open until 10:30 a.m.) on the Gondola Deck. There are a few requirements for those who want to skim:
- Entrants must be 6 years or older
- All participants must have a gondola/lift ticket
- All participants must sign a waiver
- This is an individual effort (no teams)
- Only skis or snowboards allowed
Did we say the wackier your costume, the more likely judges will notice you? Though participants will be judged on costume, crossing style, difficulty, bail height, and splash—that last one may get you extra points—the organizers will tell you “this is all about style!”. On a related note, have you hear about Squaw Valley’s Cushing Crossing? It’s an annual event, and this year it takes place on April 16 at 1 p.m. What started out as a pond skimming affair, some 26 years ago, became much more. Billed as “the best event of the spring season”, it’s packed with spills, thrills, and lots of laughs. Things get underway at 1 p.m., and at 3 p.m. the daredevils and doers get their rewards at KT Base Bar. There will only be 50 participants. Here are a few more details for adventure seekers or watchers:
