Last week I took Bennett and Colby to the library. I know this seems like it would be a common activity seeing as though my kids are 3 and 1…but…I have a secret fear of the library! Let me explain…Colby quickly let us know that he was NOT the quiet type, from just a few months we could tell he was more inclined to jump and run than sit and read. The last year that has changed and we now have a hard time getting him to bed at night with his desire for MORE books but it is a newly found love. Bennett on the other hand at 16 months enjoys books already quite a lot. We find him sitting in the living room browsing through a board book about trucks, when Colby is running around playing “worker man”. It’s been a frightening thought to attend the library and make a scene with rowdy play and loud voices. I was afraid of being the only mom with out of control kids, ruining story time for the other families.
Well, I decided that I’d just had enough with this fear of mine. After all, my boys can’t grow up not knowing what a library is or how to look up a book that’s categorized. So a week ago I tried. I parked, loaded the troops out and walked around the building and major construction in the parking lot to find that…it was CLOSED! I was devastated, all the work and buildup to get them there and get excited about it only to be turned away. So the next week we gave it another shot. This time…SUCCESS…Colby already knew he wanted to find some books about weather. With a new interest in thunder, lightening and the process of rain and snow. We walked away with 3 books on weather and one Olivia book, one of Colby’s favorite cartoons. It was a great experience and hopefully will become a weekly stop for us this winter!
So why blog about my personal tug of war with the library? Well I realized just how important it is to support our local library. If you are local or visit often become a member today. They are on the road to raise funds and generate a new library. Also, there are some great events coming up and weekly story times for young ones.
