Truckee Roundhouse Opening

Our community is arts-friendly, and one of the most newsworthy events concerning arts and crafts is about the upcoming Truckee Roundhouse opening! Most recently, they found a home! When they open—expected in early 2016—they will be located at Hanger E3 at Truckee Tahoe Airport. This new ‘MakerSpace’ is currently undergoing renovations and improvements. You can help, but, more on that later. Here’s a little history about the Roundhouse.

This California non-profit was founded for the benefit of our Truckee community. It’s a community operated workspace (MakerSpace) that will allow those with interests and skills in computers, machining, digital and electronic art, and so forth to meet, and collaborate. Renovations and fundraising goes on, but the kind of facilities the Roundhouse hopes to provide for craftspeople include:

  • Automotive Arts
  • Bicycle building/repair
  • Ceramics
  • Darkroom
  • Ski/Snowboard press

Included in the list of who is behind this great idea is founding member Alex Terrazas, Board of Directors Chair Morgan Goodwin, plus several other Board or Founding Members. Other sponsors are onboard, including Truckee-Tahoe Lumber Company, fiscal sponsor Sierra Business Council, and others. The Roundhouse continues to need the help of people like you, whether financially, or in the form of input and ideas. It’s easy to start pitching in: click here to fill out their contact form and to be added to their mailing list. Want to donate today? Click this link.

In the meantime, the team is on the move, learning, and improving. In 2016, two early events have already been planned. On January 24, they are headed to Reno to tour and talk to folks who already run successful maker spaces. On January 28 at 7 p.m., at the Tahoe Art Haus Cinema, they’re screening the documentary Impossible Light, which is about the Oakland Bay Bridge lights. You are invited to attend, and stay for brainstorming and the after-party.

This list was accurate at the time of publication; please check directly with the venue(s) to ensure dates, times, and locations remain the same.
