This has been a summer like no other….and I wouldn’t be surprised if I haven’t said that every year since 1988, my first summer in Truckee. One of my favorite things about living in Truckee is the variety that the four seasons bring. That seems like a simple statement to make. One might assume four seasons bring four changes in the weather. The fact is that each season can be different from the year before and the year before and so on and so on! I do remember seeing snow fall all of the 12 months of one year. I think that was back in about 1992.
When moving to Truckee, I was hoping for lots of thundershowers. I was raised in Connecticut and with the humidity there, I came to expect summer showers. That hasn’t been the case but this year looks like it could be our summer of thunder!
Are we experiencing great climate changes? I have no idea! I just know each year seems to have its own weather identity and this year is not any different. It seems to have been warmer than I remember yet I will often tell clients we get about 2-3 weeks of temperatures in the 90s each summer. And that’s what we’ve had.
I also felt that this fourth of July was the most crowded that I could remember. And then I reflect that it fell on a Friday so it was easy for many people to make two weekends and a week ‘s vacation out of the holiday. And it was really hot “off the hill” so why not come up to the mountains where the heat is not unpleasant?
There is so much to do here even without the special big events. You can listen to outdoor music almost every night of the week somewhere. Truckee features Wednesday night music in the park but there is music in Squaw, Tahoe City and Kings Beach on different nights. Truckee Thursdays continues to grow and become popular. It really is hard to find a day of rest!!
I continue to say that I live in Paradise! And I love watching the change in the weather. Rumor has it we will be having an El Nino this year. What that should mean is moisture and what we all hope it means in addition to moisture is cold temperatures. I’m ready for another great ski season….how about you?
