I have spent 27 happy years living in Truckee and enjoying the beauty and recreational benefits of the Lake Tahoe Basin. I moved here for the small town culture and the cross country skiing. I continue to appreciate those qualities and so many more! It wasn’t until a little over five years ago that I was invited to a Truckee River Watershed Council River Breakfast. At the event, an informative presentation was made and I became aware of something I had never considered that was going on behind the scenes in this Mountain Paradise! Water, whether it be from snow or rain is a part of the recreational activities that I enjoy so much and it runs through these mountains on its own course. The Truckee River Watershed Council right now has 50 open projects, with the goal of keeping the water flowing off the mountains, through the meadows, into the rivers and streams in safe, constructive movement rather than environmentally destructive movement. Fascinating! And I had never given this idea any consideration….as much as I take advantage of these resources.
My assumption was that Mother Nature was handling all of this! But Mother Nature doesn’t build and develop and settle into the landscape, we do. I now play a very small part in assisting the TRWC to fund and inform and it is something that is important to me now that I am aware. The TRWC has a great website, and I invite you to investigate this nonprofit to find out more, and perhaps get involved. I will be hosting a River Talk at my home sometime in January on a weekend to accommodate any of my friends and clients who live off the hill. Let me know if you have an interest in attending, no obligation, just a way to find out more about what is being done to protect our beautiful basin and its vital resources!
