My husband and I recently went to Yosemite for (no joke) my FIRST trip!! I was born and raised in California, living in Truckee since the age of 5 and have never been. My husband Erik (also a Cali born and bred) hasn’t been since he was really little. Crazy I know.
This was our first trip away without the kids. We left them with Erik’s parents in Reno. It was bitter sweet because we were able to do so many fun things that we wouldn’t have done with them but we were also surrounded by families making us miss the little guys to pieces.
We stayed at Curry Village in the “wall tents” and visited friends of ours down the road at Housekeeping Camp. Both were nice, but their camp had the added bonus of room to sit, cook, fire pit and room to roam. Without the kids, Curry Village was really fun but you have to eat out and with the youngens that adds up quick plus my 3 1/2 and 15 month old need all the space available to romp and play.
The first day we did the Vernon Falls to Nevada Falls hike hitting a portion of the John Muir trail. It was beautiful with spectacular weather and views…lucky lucky. We had hoped to do Half Dome but Fri-Sun now requires a permit due to congestion on the trails.
Cruising on our mountain bikes after hiking, dinner with friends was so incredible. It was odd to be without nap schedules, melt downs and endless chatter but it was just what the doctor ordered….peace.
The next day we did a short little hike just outside of Tualame Meadows which was fun and gave us a chance to stretch our legs one more time before hitting the road.
Next summer we will bring the little ones, stay at Housekeeping Camp and make smores…a much different experience I’m sure but a special family trip.
