2016 Turkey Trot and Mashed Potato Mile

The 40th Annual Donner Lake Turkey Trot and Mashed Potato Mile are just around the corner. While it kind of makes you hungry to think about it, these events give you a chance to earn your dinner. And actually, that’s how this whole thing got started! The events take place on Sunday, November 5, 2016. After a little history, we’ll give you the key details you need to get involved.

In 1976, a few runners, wanting to work off calories before their turkey dinners – plural, as there’s a lot of eating that seems to go on around this time – decided to run around Donner Lake. History has it that the run has always been “fun and funky”. It has taken place in freezing temperatures, rain, snowstorms, and yes, even on sunny days. This is a feel good set of events no matter which way you look at it, as the Auburn Ski Club Junior Nordic Team organizes it as a fundraiser. So whether you show up to spectate, walk, or run, you benefit as do many others. In time, the events caught on in a big way. Today it sees over 200 runners, who come in from Reno, Sacramento, and the Bay Area. Locals enjoy it too, as a great way to greet the morning and support good causes.

Race organizers are asking people to register in advance on-line, or in person at Tahoe Sports Hub on November 5, or 6. Bib pick-ups will also be available at the store if you register early enough. Event times and other details are as follows:

  • 9:30 a.m. – Walkers Start
  • 10 a.m. – Mashed Potato Mile
  • 10:30 a.m. – Turkey Trot

Prices vary for the two events, and depend on whether you register early, and on age. For the Turkey Trot, pre-race day prices are $25, or $40 the day of. For the Mashed Potato Mile, pre-race day prices are $15, or $30 the day of. The prices jump considerably on race day, so consider registering early. For more information about this annual outdoor exercise experience, please visit the organizers’ website at www.aubirnskiclub.com.

Donner Lake Triathlon

June 27, 2016 By highaltitude Leave a Comment

Donner-lake-triathlon

What kind of regime is required to compete in a triathlon? According to the website Active.com:

“With no current fitness you can be ready to do your first triathlon in only 12 weeks.”

The above doesn’t mean it’s easy, and doesn’t explain what you have to do to get from “no current fitness” to triathlon-level fitness. But yes, it is doable. What happens in a triathlon? While there are different kinds of triathlons, and specifics may change, here’s what happens, taking the Olympic Triathlon model as an example:

  • A swim of just less than a mile
  • A bike ride of almost 25 miles
  • A 6.67 mile run

There are transitions between each event.

The annual Donner Lake Triathlon, a popular one in the Truckee area, featuring five different types of events, plus an opportunity to train or attend a clinic, happens this year on July 23-24. It’s an all ages affair, an excellent venue for athletes at various physical fitness levels, and a great spectator event as well. Please check the organizers website DonnerLakeTri.com for all the details, including up to the minute changes. Here’s a look at how weekend looks.

Donner Lake Triathlon Schedule of Events

The five types of events include a non-competitive event for kids aged 4-15, a Sprint Triathlon, an Olympic Triathlon, the Half 70/3, and an Aquabike event. The current schedule looks like this:

  • Friday, July 22, 2016 – At West End Beach, Donner Lake, beginning at 5 p.m. there are packet pick-up times, a Swim Clinic, and a Pre Ride Donner Lake Triathlon Olympic/Half Bike Course.
  • Saturday, July 23, 2016 – Same location, beginning at 6 a.m. when the Sprint Transition Area opens, with the actual Sprint Start at 7:30 a.m. Following that, another 14 events in all will take place, ending up at 4 p.m. with the Olympic/Half/Aquabike race briefing and athlete meeting. In the midst of it all, many activities for kids, an Expo, and the Awards, Food & Beverage event. A jam-packed day.
  • Sunday, July 24, 2016 – At 5:30 a.m. at West End Beach the Transition Area opens. The Half Triathlon and Aquabike events both begin at 7:30 a.m. and the Olympic Triathlon at 7:45 am. Various events and activities follow, including an Expo, live music beginning at 1 p.m., and an Awards Ceremony at around 3 p.m.

For specific wave start times, and all the details you would need, head over to the site’s schedule page.

Is this event ‘good’ for the Truckee-Tahoe area? Absolutely. Partnering with Green Bucks, every race registered for generates a dollar donation to support local projects such as the watershed, to maintain trails, to protect wildlife, or to fund environmental stewardship programs.

Tahoe Cup Paddle Racing Series

Donner Lake or Lake Tahoe? If you’re counting down, the Donner Lake event takes place on May 21, 2016. It kicks off this year’s Tahoe Cup Paddle Racing Series. Whether recreational or race enthusiast, or spectator, you can participate in the excitement of SUP, prone paddleboard, or OCI class. All paddling craft, and paddlers, will have their chance. Following is more information about this year’s Cup.

Tahoe Cup Paddle Racing SeriesThere are actually three distinct Tahoe Cup Paddle Racing Series events:

  • Donner Lake, on May 21, 2016
  • Waterman’s Paddle Jam, on July 9, 2016
  • Tahoe Fall Classic, on September 11, 2016

If you’re a paddler – if you want to participate and registration isn’t closed for the event you’re interested in – please visit the organizer’s registration page here.

Whose behind ‘the Cup’? Who do we have to thank? The Lake Tahoe Paddleboard Association, a not-for-profit, states in their Mission Statement they want to “promote, provide, and support environmentally friendly human-powered paddlesport activities in the Tahoe Basin.” The Cup has been in existence since 2009. Several key stakeholders assist in this annual effort: participants, sponsors, and exhibitors. Even more of a good news story, all proceeds from the Tahoe Cup go toward benefitting non-motorized aquatic programs in the Truckee-Tahoe area.

September 1, 2011 By highaltitude Leave a Comment

2011 Weekly Real Estate Market Report
North Lake Tahoe-Truckee Region MLS

Residential Properties – Single Family Homes and Condominiums

Week of: August 22nd to August 28th

Active Inventory Summary:

Active Listings: The inventory for residential properties went up slightly to 1,378 active listings in the market; 1,072 single family homes and 306 condominiums for sale.  Coldwell Banker has over 17% of the active listings in the market and continues to be the market leader for listings.

REO-Short Sale Listings:  Of the active listings, there are 153 properties listed as short sales, (11.1%) and 50 properties listed as REO sales, (3.6%).

Months of Inventory:  Based on the current inventory and sales for the previous 30-day period, the market has over 14-months of inventory available.  The inventory of homes at today’s prices continues to favor the buyer interested in an investment property, vacation home or moving up to a larger home or better location.

Sales Summary:  Year-To-Date

Total Sales 2011 Vs 2010:

Total Sales:  For 2011, there have been 703 residential properties sold in the market as compared to 688 for the same period in 2010 which is a year over year 2.2% increase in sales.  Of the total sales in the market for 2011, 542 have been single family homes, while 161 or 23% of the sales were condominiums.  I n 2010, condominiums represented 34% of the sales which is significantly higher than in 2011.

REO & Short Sales:  Of the properties sold, 144 have been REO’s, (20.5%), and 107 have been Short Sales, (15.2%) which results in over 35% of the properties sold being distressed properties.  In 2010 for the same period, there were 139 REO sales and 91 short sales or roughly 33% of the total sales.

Sales Price Range:  For the year, there have been 470 residential properties sold priced below $500,000, 177 properties sold between $500,000 and $1,000,000 and 56 properties sold over $1,000,000.

Median and Average Sales Prices:  The median sales price for properties sold year to date is $397,700 while the average sales price is $528,675. For the same period in 2010, the median sales price was $429,335 and the average sales price was $627,762 which is a (7.4%) and (15.8%) decline in price respectively year over year.

Last Week’s Sales:  For the week of August 22nd a total of 21 properties sold which was 24% higher than the previous week’s sales of 17 properties.  Of the properties sold last week, three (3) of the properties sold were priced over $1,000,000 with one closing at $6.4 million and another priced at $3.2 million.

Pending Sales:  Currently there are 196 pending residential sales in the market which is up slightly from the previous week.  Of the pending sales, 16 are short sales and 20 are REO properties which is roughly 18% of the pending sales being distressed properties.

Market Activity Summary:

Last week’s residential sales were up nicely from the previous two weeks with 21 residential properties closing.  There were three properties closed over $1 million dollars and of which two were over $3 million.  Last week’s sales came more in line with the average weekly sales for July and August of last year which is encouraging.  In addition, there continues to be an encouraging trend as pending sales went up again last week to 196 properties reported in escrow.  As it relates to pending sales, only 18% of the pending sales are distressed properties whereas we are seeing 35% of the overall sales for the year being and REO or short sale.

Median sales prices have decreased from last year by 7.4% to $397,700 while the average sales prices have decreased by 15.8% to $627,762.  These price trends are one of the major factors influencing home sales to date and should bode well for the remainder of the year.

The hottest segment of the market continues to be homes priced under $500,000 as roughly 67% or 470 properties have sold in this price range.  In 2010, 60% or 413 properties sold in this price range which would be expected given the drop median sales prices.

Luxury home sales, homes priced above $1,000,000, continue lag behind 2010 sales as 56 properties or 8.0%, have sold year to date as compared to 79 properties last year which is a 29% decline.  For 2011, the median sales price for luxury properties is $1,615,000 while the average sales price is $2,062,595 which are almost identical to the prices for 2010 in this segment.

The mid range market, sales $500,000 to $1,000,000 are down as well from last year with 177 properties sold or 25.2% of sales as compared to 196 properties sold or 28.5% in this range in 2010.

Distressed properties, REO and Short Sales represent 35% of the sales in the market which is almost identical to the quantity of REO and Short sales in 2010. Interestingly enough while 35% of the sales are distressed properties only 14% of the active listings and 18% of the pending sales are distressed properties.

With the inventory of great residential properties on the market, homes priced at 10-year lows and some of the lowest interest rates in history, we are anticipating a strong rally towards the end of the year.

Now may be one of the best times for Buyers considering an investment in a vacation home or investment property in the Lake Tahoe-Truckee market.
