Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue is important to us; vitally so for some whose lives have been saved. The group has been active for many years, and as you know, we’ve written about them before. A worthy, important, and dynamic part of the fabric of our community. Funding and your generosity are important to them, and certainly, there are opportunities to do so. Now there’s a brand new one: The Great Trail Race (from Tahoe City to Truckee). What promises to be a “new tradition” takes place for the first time on Sunday, October 9, 2016. Here are a few details for you…
Many of our readers will already know about The Great Ski Race; this race is very similar, and in fact follows as closely as it can the same route as the Ski Race. You can bike or run. Here is what the route entails:
- A course length of roughly 18 miles (30 kilometers)
- Paved and dirt sections of trails, roads, and fire roads
- An Elite course, which also covers single-track sections of the Tevis and Sawtooth Trails
If you’re convinced this inaugural event is for you, you can you can register online at this page. Registration before September 30 will run you $70, whether you run or bike. After September, but before October 7, the cost is $75.
As the organizers say, you can “set your own pace and enjoy a beautiful Tahoe mountain bike ride, Tahoe trail run or walk through the Sierra forest”. Or you make this event an annual goal for your summer training. The lands you’ll be traversing are part of the Tahoe Basin Management Unit and Truckee Ranger District. Beautiful. The answer to the unasked and pressing question: yes, you’ll get the t-shirt too!
Of course, you’ll also be helping our Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue team.
