El Niño years usually mean more snow for us! And we want more snow. We want enough snow so we almost have to say “uncle” to make it stop. This is an El Niño year for us. Websites and resources abound that predict and/or report on the snowfall in our area and people here have their opinions too. Based on some of these things, we wanted to give you a winter 2016 Truckee snow update on how things are looking for us right now, and in the near future.
As recently reported on by Moonshine Ink, a great little paper, here’s a fun snow fact: Tahoe Snowpack’s January 2016 media was a healthy 136%. The Ink’s Facebook page also reports on the latest resort/Tahoe-Truckee news, and they post great photos! One of their most recent snow-related facts—very good news for us—was that USA Today recently polled readers and 10Best to come up with the 10 Best Ski Resorts. You know what’s coming; right? Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows was named the Best Ski Resort in North America! Fantastic. Congratulations.
Back on the snow/powder report, we wanted to share with you some information from a few other sources. Did you know that the Bryan Allegretto, formerly of Tahoe Weather Discussion has a new site? It’s called The Tahoe Daily Snow, and it’s part of OpenSnow. Early this month, Bryan reported about a storm that was to bring our area another 5-10 inches of snow lake level, or 10-15 inches in the mountains. Still 100% of average at that point. Every resort also offers up current weather and snow conditions. Sugar Bowl recently reported a base depth of 120 inches on its summit. Tahoetopia offers their weekly Lake Tahoe Snow Report as well. All major resorts and areas are reported on there, including Tahoe Donner, Squaw Valley, Diamond Peak, and many others. If your phone’s handy and you want information on the go, simply text snowreport to 245-87.
So keep your personal snow radar tuned into Moonshine Ink, or other sources you trust, and, enjoy the outdoors!
