The Truckee Watershed River Council has a history of working hard to benefit our community. We know, as we’ve pitched in to help. You can help too, and in many ways. There’s an annual event coming up in October – the 21st Annual Truckee River Day – and your hands-on assistance would be appreciated. Following are a few more details for you.
Date: Sunday, October 16, 2016
Time, Full Day: 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Time, Half Day: 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Locations: To be announced
The work you will do when you join other volunteers will consist of one or more of the following activities:
- Planting restoration sites with seedlings and willows
- Removing invasive vegetation
- Composting and mulching
- Removing garbage
Registration is required for all volunteers. When you register here, you will be able to specify what project(s) you would prefer to work on, and whether or not you’re part of a group of volunteers, or working on your own. The organizers will do their best to accommodate your preferences, and will be in touch with you the week before the clean-up date to tell you where you’ll work, the work you’ll be doing, and what you’ll need to wear or bring the day of.
In 1996 approximately 400 volunteers assembled to pitch in, work on, and complete 10 projects. Since then and over the past 20 years, working on dozens of different restoration projects, thousands of volunteers have leant a helping hand to keep our river and wetlands healthy.
As a special bonus this same day, the organizers will be presenting a River Fair in the afternoon, from 1-4 p.m., to celebrate the Truckee River. This event takes place at Granite Flat Campground (Highway 89 South, approximately a mile south of Truckee). Enjoy music, free food, fun activities, and a special performance at 3 p.m.
